This cute brother and sister duo is Cutie and Auggie and they are this week's Pet of the Week!  Cutie is a 4 year old Cockerpoo and Auggie is a 5 year old mini Schnauzer.  They have been boarding at Best Friends in Harrison for five years.  During their stay here over Thanksgiving they really enjoyed their Holiday Meal - a yummy Turkey dinner with sweet potato biscuits.  They have so much fun together when they stay with us and can't wait to get their grooming services before they go home so they are nice and fresh for their family!

Best Friends Pet Care Donates Hair For Oil Spill

A non-profit organization called Matter of Trust is asking for hair donations. With the collected clean & matt free hair they will create hair matts & hair booms out of recycled hair and nylon. These hair matts & hair booms will be placed into the water where it will soak up the oil  that has contaminated the water. Once Best Friends has collected enough hair each week we will be shipping it to the volunteers from Matter of Trust. Pet First Aid Training

When most people own an animal its more then just a dog or cat its a family member. An emergency can occur at any time and its important that you know how to help your pet until you can get them to a vet clinic. This weeks Pet of the Week is very special for us because Scooch needs a home! Scooch has been a best friend of ours for about six years. Scooch is an 8 1/2 years old pitbull who is so very sweet and loving. Scooch loves to play and loves attention from people. Scooch's owner sadly passed away and his guardian is boarding him with us until we can find him a home. Please consider coming to meet this great dog.

Meet Athena she is the loving pet of Manager Chrissy Carpanzano. Chrissy adopted Athean 6 months ago from the Last Resort Pet Rescue based out of New Jersey. Athena is so sweet, fun & totally energetic. Athena loves her four kitty siblings and loves every dog she meets. If she could play with anyone and everyone she would. Single Female Firefighter Saves Yorkie in Brooklyn!!

A house fire broke out in the Midwood area of Brooklyn last week.  All of the humans in the house were able to get out unscathed, but there was a little Yorkshire Terrier inside who couldn't escape.  Luckily female firefighter Daina Mielnik of Engine Co. 276 was there in time to help!  She successfully got the dog out of the house.  The dog required CPR and Oxygen.  Mielnik told the New York Post "I gave the dog oxygen. It's my first animal rescue. It made me feel great. I love animals. Everyone hates to see an animal in pain."  The Yorkie was brought to Noah's Ark Animal Clinic where he underwent treatment.  At the time they brought him in he was unconscious, but now he is responsive.  Let's keep our fingers crossed for a full recovery!!  Daina (26 years of age) was happy to save the little dog, but also took advantage of the media coverage to let everyone know that she is single!!  To read more about this story visit the Gothamist website.

Meet the newest member of the Central Park Zoo. This adorable Mini-Nubian goat is the baby of Angel. He was born on January 20,2010 and weighs in at only ten pounds. Once full grown he can weigh up to sixty pounds. This cute little baby joins the already four exisitng goats at the Central Park Zoo.

Donation Made to Harrison Dog Park!

Our fundraising efforts for the Harrison Dog Park have paid off!  On January 21st Best Friends Pet Care in Harrison, NY presented a check for $2500 to the Harrison Town Board in support of the local dog park.  Thanks to Boy Scout RJ Suhre for getting this project off the ground and a big thanks to everyone who donated!!  Read the press release below for more details on the fundraising efforts. 

Dog Park Project Gets Boost from Challenge Grant

The fundraising for a local dog park for Harrison got a boost this week with the announcement of a Challenge Grant from Best Friends Pet Care.

After learning about the project initiated by Harrison Boy Scout RJ Suhre, Best Friends has launched a matching funds initiative to help speed up the campaign. The company will match dollar-for-dollar, the first $1000 donated between now and Thanksgiving, yielding a total of $2000 towards the goal.

The dog park, which will be located downtown near Veteran’s Park, was approved by the Harrison Town Board in late September with the caveat that Suhre must raise all of the needed funds from private donations since municipal monies could not be used. About $8000 will be needed to put up the fence and prepare the property.

After almost a month of solicitation, however, the campaign is less than halfway to the goal. “We really need to get donations in quickly,” say Suhre, who been working on the project since last spring. “The fencing has to be installed before the ground freezes or we won’t be able to open the park by spring.”

Although Suhre is a dog lover himself, he also undertook the dog park initiative as his Eagle Scout project. The park must open to the public before Suhre turns 18 in March for him to earn the Eagle Scout award.

Best Friends manager Crissy Carpanzano, who has been in Harrison for 15 years, says that when RJ stopped into Best Friends to drop off some flyers about his fund drive, “we all become very excited that Harrison dogs could finally have its own off-leash park. Exercise and socialization are so important for the health of our dogs.”

“We knew right away that we needed to do something to help, and we needed to do it quickly,” she said.

To get the fundraising challenge off the ground, Best Friends has sent out an appeal to all of its Harrison clients, encouraging them to support the cause. “We set Thanksgiving as our challenge deadline because we want to be sure the RJ is able to meet the deadline for Eagle Scout certification.”

“You don’t need to be a client of ours to participate in the Challenge Grant. We will match every dollar donated, regardless of the source,” adds Carpanzano. “So call us soon, and whatever you donate will double in value!”

Holiday Shelter Donations

Each year at Best Friends Pet Care we set up our "Angel Tree" with pictures of local shelter pets in hopes that not only do we collect gifts for them but that someone sees a pet that they may want to adopt. This year the selected shelters were The Yonkers Animal Shelter & The New Rochelle Humane Society. The items collected were either purchased from the Best Friends retail lobby or were kind donations brought to us from our clients. We thank everyone who contributed to our "Angel Tree".
